Gala Opening Reception Friday Jan 10 @ 7pm

Surface and Symbol is a solo exhibition of new works by Northwestern Ontario-based artist Jean Marshall (HBA). This exhibition focuses on Marshall’s appreciation for materials and process, utilizing beads, fabric, hide and leather to express her ideas about identity which responds to the character and stories of family and friends from places such as her mother’s home community, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (Big Trout Lake) and Thunder Bay. The works in this exhibition operate as abstract portraits, guided by her impression and acknowledgement of these people and places. Jean Marshall is a professionally practicing visual artist in Northwestern Ontario and received her HBA in Native Studies from Trent University.  Marshall is an active and well recognized artist in our region and nationally. She’s responsible for organizing/curating a number of exhibitions shown throughout Ontario and is a founding member of the Anemki Art Collective in Thunder Bay. Marshall is the recipient of numerous grants and residencies. Surface & Symbol was curated by Suzanne Morrissette, in collaboration with the Ontario Craft Council, Toronto. Join us for the Gala Opening Reception featuring Art-Music and two coinciding shows, catered and cool winter refreshments, artist talks and more! Gallery 3
